Mommy Guilt

I'm not going to lie. This SAHM thing is tougher than one thinks.  However, I wouldn't change it for the world!

It has been over 2 months since I left my job to become a stay at home mom.  We decided this was the best decision for us for many reasons.  With hours and pay being cut at work, we felt that my becoming a SAHM was the best decision for us. We would be able to save money on gas and child care. Not to mention the fact that I get to spend time with the kids.

I love my kids more than anything but some days I just need more than 5 minutes of me time.  I feel guilty asking anyone to watch them for any amount of time. I feel guilty the entire time I am gone. I feel bad for asking my mom to watch them. I feel bad for asking hubby to look after them after he's spent many long hours at work.

Why do I feel so guilty?

For instance, Monday before last DH and I went shopping for a few items. We had an hour drive to the stores and an hour back so that took two hours of the time. The other three hours were spent in various stores that we don't normally get the chance to shop at. I cannot tell you how many times I looked at the time, thinking "Mom is probably ready for us to get them."  Even though I know she enjoys spending time with them since she no longer watches them during the week for me.

I just cannot help but feel guilty for going out without them.  I know that I need to get over this.  I will lose myself as a person if I am JUST the kids' mother and the hubby's wife. I just need some ME time without the guilt.

Maybe I'll get over it one of these days...

And then there's the whole "Not really contributing to the income (other than my small side jobs that barely bring in money)..." But that's another post for another time.

TV Show Sparks Family History Research

History buff I am not.  I rarely paid attention in history classes during school. I knew very little of the Hatfield & McCoy feud.  I did happen to marry a history buff though, so he makes sure to fill me in on many history subjects, whether I want to know about said subject or not. :)

The three night Hatfields & McCoys mini-series debuted on HISTORY on Memorial Day. HISTORY showed the mini-series on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. Our DVR was already filled with shows to record at 9 p.m. so we had to record the late night showings of the series and watch them the following evenings.

"Hatfields & McCoys" starred Kevin Costner (Hatfield) and Bill Paxton (McCoy) as the patriarchs of the West Virginia and Kentucky clans whose violent clashes had roots in the American Civil War. The miniseries is to be released on Blu-ray and DVD July 31. I do love me some Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton so I knew watching this was a must. I was very shocked at how much I actually enjoyed the mini-series.  Apparently the rest of the viewing audience loved it too.

According to businessweek.com, "The three nights of "Hatfields & McCoys" were the top-rated entertainment telecasts ever for ad-supported basic cable, History said. Wednesday's finale of "Hatfields & McCoys" was the most-watched of the three nights, with 14.3 million viewers. According to the History channel, that makes it the No. 1 non-sports and non-news program ever on ad-supported cable.

While watching the mini-series I thought to myself "I know nothing about my family history. That is such a shame." This series has prompted me to do some research on my family's history.  What have I learned so far?  My great-great grandfather Rhoden Calvin McDaniel was a confederate soldier in the 62nd Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Rowan's) (80th Infantry) during The Civil War.  Records show that his mother and father are Alex and Emily McDonald of Kentucky.  I am intrigued to learn more about the McDonald name becoming McDaniel.

So, thank you HISTORY for such a great series that has given me the desire to learn more about my own family.  Interested in learning more about Civil War soldiers? I highly recommend this web site.

I will be glued to HISTORY this afternoon from 4 p.m - 12 p.m.  There will be a 2 hour documentary on the Hatfields & McCoys feud followed by the three part mini-series episodes back to back! Yes, it was so good, I'm watching it again!!

All You Need is Sidewalk Chalk!

It's amazing what a little bit of sidewalk chalk can do! Aiden was getting restless from being stuck in the house all day (due to crazy HOT weather). He kept asking to go outside so I told him that we would go outside when it cooled down.  This was around 6 pm and it was still hot but not nearly as hot as the middle of the day. He even asked to play hopscotch. My little man is growing up... *sniff, sniff, sniff*

And apparently . . . HE CAN FLY!!!

BBQ Fun!

We had a fun afternoon celebrating Memorial Day as well as my uncle's 70th birthday with the family at a local campground.  But man, was it HOTTTT!  I think my phone read 93 degrees at one point.  Nonetheless, a good time was had by all.  Here are a few photos . . .

Summer is here!

Summer is here!!! Shhh, don't tell the calendar. According to the Mayans, summer begins this year on June 20th but Mother Nature says otherwise. It's HOT! Then there's the whole 'Memorial Day signals the beginning of summer and Labor Day signals summer's end'. Anyone else having a hard time believing that Memorial Day is on Monday??

Good thing my sister finally talked my brother-in-law into putting in a pool! Guess where the kids and I will be spending the summer?!?
