TV Show Sparks Family History Research

History buff I am not.  I rarely paid attention in history classes during school. I knew very little of the Hatfield & McCoy feud.  I did happen to marry a history buff though, so he makes sure to fill me in on many history subjects, whether I want to know about said subject or not. :)

The three night Hatfields & McCoys mini-series debuted on HISTORY on Memorial Day. HISTORY showed the mini-series on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. Our DVR was already filled with shows to record at 9 p.m. so we had to record the late night showings of the series and watch them the following evenings.

"Hatfields & McCoys" starred Kevin Costner (Hatfield) and Bill Paxton (McCoy) as the patriarchs of the West Virginia and Kentucky clans whose violent clashes had roots in the American Civil War. The miniseries is to be released on Blu-ray and DVD July 31. I do love me some Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton so I knew watching this was a must. I was very shocked at how much I actually enjoyed the mini-series.  Apparently the rest of the viewing audience loved it too.

According to businessweek.com, "The three nights of "Hatfields & McCoys" were the top-rated entertainment telecasts ever for ad-supported basic cable, History said. Wednesday's finale of "Hatfields & McCoys" was the most-watched of the three nights, with 14.3 million viewers. According to the History channel, that makes it the No. 1 non-sports and non-news program ever on ad-supported cable.

While watching the mini-series I thought to myself "I know nothing about my family history. That is such a shame." This series has prompted me to do some research on my family's history.  What have I learned so far?  My great-great grandfather Rhoden Calvin McDaniel was a confederate soldier in the 62nd Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Rowan's) (80th Infantry) during The Civil War.  Records show that his mother and father are Alex and Emily McDonald of Kentucky.  I am intrigued to learn more about the McDonald name becoming McDaniel.

So, thank you HISTORY for such a great series that has given me the desire to learn more about my own family.  Interested in learning more about Civil War soldiers? I highly recommend this web site.

I will be glued to HISTORY this afternoon from 4 p.m - 12 p.m.  There will be a 2 hour documentary on the Hatfields & McCoys feud followed by the three part mini-series episodes back to back! Yes, it was so good, I'm watching it again!!

  1. We actually live down the road from Averasboro battlefield! A few battles were fought there during the civil war! Here's the site: http://www.averasboro.com/

They do live reenactments and such. People say that if you go at night, you can see the ghosts of old soldiers... yikes! But it's a really cool place, full of history!

You can also watch the episodes, on the History Channel site! I won't be able to watch the ones that air tonight because the hubs and I are going to a cookout later, grilled food = yum!

  3. He said that it was very accurate, with the occasional "tv additions or enhancements" as shows usually do, shows and movies are rarely on point. We were on our way home last night after a quick shopping trip. I told him that there was a documentary about the feud scheduled to come on before they re-aired the episodes. He said "I wish you would have DVR'd that!" I said, "I did, dear. I did." His response? "Awesome!! Thanks!"
